2018-2026 Expedition: Rear Differential Pinion Seal Replacement

Time: 1-2 hrs

Difficulty: moderate

Cost: $40-120 (depending on if you service the rear differential with the repair)

How to replace the rear differential drive pinion seal on a Ford Expedition. The process is the same for any 2018-2026 Ford Expedition. They all require 75W-85 full synthetic gear lube. The capacity will vary slightly, but in every case, the idea is to fill the rear differential to about 1/2 " to 3/4" below the fill hole. On vehicles with limited slip, you would add 4oz of XL-3 or equivalent friction modifier.  Some fluids have friction modifier already added. These types of fluids are compatible with limited slip and non-limited slip differentials. Component torques as well as the pinion baearing preload bearing process, are the same across the model years. This video shows the process start to finish, including how to check and set pinion bearing preload.
