2019-2024 Sierra/Silverado: Engine Air Filter (5.3L)
Time: 5-10 minutes
Difficulty: easy
Cost: $25-40
FUNCTION
Pre-filtered air is ducted from a fresh air source, usually near the front of the engine compartment, into an airbox where it passes through a filter and then ducted to the engine for consumption. High volumes of clean air promote robust combustion, increasing performance and fuel economy.
WHY SERVICE
Unclean air drawn into the engine contaminates the oil and acts as an abrasive on moving parts. It also gums up sensors affecting fuel economy and performance. An excessively dirty or restricted air filter can decrease fuel mileage, reduce horsepower, make noise, create smell, set codes, and accelerate engine wear.
INTERVAL
GM recommends replacing the air filter every 45,000 miles, but to check it with every oil change. An air filter should be replaced on-condition. Heavy dust or salt environments, humidity, and vehicle load can affect the volume and condition of the air drawn through the air filter. If the filter appears dirty, replace it.
METHOD
The filter is serviced by opening the airbox, then removing and replacing the filter element. It's a good idea to vacuum out the airbox at the same time.
